Licences and rules

Are there electric vehicles I can ride without a licence?

Yes, but only a few. Without a licence, you can ride e-bikes with a continuous power of no more than 0.25 kW whose assistance cuts out when you stop pedalling or reach 25 km/h, and stand-up electric scooters with a top speed of no more than 25 km/h. You must be at least 15 to ride them. Anything above these limits counts as a moped and needs a licence. “Teknoped” is a sales name; the vehicle’s class is stated on its certificate of conformity.

What licence do I need for an electric moped?

Two- and three-wheelers with a top speed of no more than 45 km/h and an engine of no more than 50 cc, or 4 kW for an electric motor, are mopeds. They need at least a class M licence. The minimum age for class M is 16. A class B licence also covers class M.

Can I ride a 125 cc motorcycle on a B licence?

Yes, with conditions. You must have held a class B licence for at least two years, meet the health requirements for two-wheelers, and not have had your licence taken away in the last five years. Once you complete the motorcycle training of the Ministry of National Education (MEB) and pass the practical test, this entitlement is added to your licence record. It is valid only in Turkey and does not cover commercial use such as courier work.

What are the speed limits for mopeds and motorcycles?

For mopeds, the limit is 30 km/h in town and 45 km/h out of town, and mopeds may not use motorways. For motorcycles, it is 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on two-lane roads, 90 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways.

What is the fine for riding a moped without a licence?

Law No. 7574 set the fine for driving without a licence at 40,000 TL in 2026. An owner who lets someone without a licence use their vehicle is fined a further 40,000 TL. The amounts are updated every year in line with the revaluation rate.

Are helmets and other gear compulsory?

Yes. Since November 2025, riders of e-bikes, mopeds and motorcycles must wear a helmet, plus goggles if it has no visor, and passengers must wear a helmet too. On motorcycles, the rider and passenger must also wear gloves to the TS EN 13594 standard. A reflective vest is compulsory when riding at night. On the helmet, look for the ECE R22 approval label with the letter E. The fine for not wearing a helmet is 2,500 TL. Repeat offences within a year cost 5,000 TL and then 10,000 TL.

Plates, inspection and insurance

Does an electric moped need a number plate?

Yes. All motor vehicles, mopeds included, must be registered, which means getting a number plate. Pedal-assisted e-bikes are not registered.

Is traffic insurance compulsory for a moped?

Law No. 7574 brings mopeds under compulsory traffic insurance (trafik sigortası) from 1 January 2027. The general conditions of the insurance are expected to be updated to match. If you are buying a moped, taking out insurance now protects you if you have an accident. We will update this page once it is clear how the rule is applied.

When is a motorcycle inspection due?

Motorcycles and mopeds have their first vehicle inspection (muayene) when they are 3 years old, then one every 2 years. A notary will not process the sale of a vehicle without a valid inspection.

In an accident, does the other party’s insurance pay?

Property damage is covered by the at-fault party’s compulsory traffic insurance, within the policy limits, and you choose the workshop. If you have comprehensive cover (kasko), you can also claim on your own insurance. We explain the process step by step on our “Accident and insurance” page.

Servicing and warranty

How long is the Volta warranty?

Volta vehicles have a 2-year warranty. Petrol motorcycles and ATVs have 2 years or 30,000 km, whichever comes first. The battery, charger and motor are covered too, apart from wear from normal use and loss of capacity. The warranty must be activated at an authorized service point within one month of delivery.

I bought my Volta somewhere else. Will you service it?

Yes. As an authorized Volta service point, we look after Volta vehicles wherever they were bought. For warranty work, bring both the invoice and the warranty certificate.

When should my electric Volta be serviced?

First check at 1 month, then every 6 months. If more than 6 months pass between two services, you lose the warranty. On petrol Volta models, the first service is at 500 km or 1 month, then every 3,000 km or 6 months.

Do you repair brands other than Volta?

Yes. We service and repair petrol and electric scooters and motorcycles of every brand.

Do I need an appointment?

You do not need one. If you message us first, you will not have to wait, and we can get the parts you need ready in advance.

Buying and selling

What should I look out for when buying a used bike?

Check the damage record (text the number plate to 5664) and make sure the chassis and engine numbers match the registration document (ruhsat). Find out whether there is a lien, a seizure order, unpaid motor vehicle tax (MTV) or an unpaid fine on the bike. Check that the vehicle inspection is valid, look at the service history and go for a short test ride. On the bikes we sell, we check all of this with you.

How does a sale at the notary work?

Before going to the notary, the buyer takes out traffic insurance, and the notary asks for a valid vehicle inspection. Payment goes through the Secure Payment System (Güvenli Ödeme Sistemi), and the money passes to the seller once the notary has completed the transaction. The notary fee is 0.2% of the sale price, with a minimum of 1,000 TL.

I want to sell my bike. Can you give me a price without seeing it?

From photos and details, we make a first estimate and give you a price range. We give the final price once we have seen the bike.

For foreign nationals

Can foreigners buy a motorcycle in Turkey?

Yes. Registration is done at a notary, and the vehicle gets a number plate with letters in the MA–MZ range. It is registered under your foreign national ID number or, if you do not have one, your tax number (vergi numarası). A vehicle with these plates can be driven by the owner, their spouse, their children or a driver they employ.

Can I buy a motorbike as a tourist, without a residence permit?

Sources differ on this: some notaries process the sale with a passport and tax number, while others ask for a residence permit (ikamet izni). Before the sale, we recommend confirming with the notary who will handle it.

How long can I ride on a foreign licence?

For six months from the date you enter Turkey. After that, your foreign licence is converted into a Turkish one at the civil registry office (Nüfus Müdürlüğü). Foreigners living in Turkey on a residence permit cannot drive commercially in a Turkish-plated vehicle, for example as couriers.

What happens to unpaid traffic fines?

Since February 2026, foreign nationals’ unpaid traffic fines have been collected when they enter Turkey, and entry can be refused if they are not paid. If you pay a fine within one month, you get a 25% discount.
